08:00·AS IT HAPPENED
A big Italian-Irish merger with a guest list that kept growing — the lawn was the only answer, and the lawn said yes to all of it.

The marquee went up two days early so June could walk it empty. Dinner for a hundred and eighty-eight under canvas, the lake going pink past the ha-ha, and a band that understood the curfew was midnight and treated 23:59 as a deadline of honour.

The last shuttle left at half past midnight. The north field was empty by one. The estate keeps the photograph of the empty marquee at dawn.

“Golden hour on the terrace — our guests still bring it up, a year later. The marquee held a hundred and eighty-eight and the sky held everything else.”
